Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Did not finish book.

1.0

This book is highly triggering for those sensitive to or even aware of the issue of self-harm and suicide. Schwab does not deal with the topics she brings up, but instead uses them to carelessly kick-start her plot.

The plot in of itself is severely lacking, but the non-existent character development is the most troubling. Neither of the two main characters appear to grow from their brush with suicide, which allows the reader to glaze over its severity.

I couldn't believe how this author thought it right to put these themes out without handling them responsibly or respectfully, especially considering the young adult audience for this book. Suicide features in this book as something glorified yet menial, with a disturbingly blasé use at the beginning. Even ignoring the poor, cliché writing style, I found it a truly sick and disturbing read.
