I feel quite torn about this one! I enjoyed it while I reading it but the ending didn't feel as satisfying as it could have been, especially with how much everything had been built up. The resolution with Chalced felt quite easy and there wasn't as much payoff with Hest as I'd hoped. As much as I loved Hobb doubling down on how awful he is, with him going on this journey but then refusing to learn anything from it, this also made it a bit disappointing for me! Especially as no-one ever found out what happened to him in the end.
There were also so many POV characters by this point that some of the original main characters in the first book were pushed to sidelines and not given much to do, which was already becoming a bit of a problem for me in the last book. This is especially the case for Sedric and Sintara.I think the ending could have been made more interesting if we had had Sintara's point of view of say, her killing the duke, which would have pulled her back to centre stage and meant that the duke's death wasn't something that we're just told happend off page. I'm glad that Sedric had his final confrontation with Hest but this could have been stronger if Hest had realised that he no longer had control over him. And as much as I loved Carson and his relationship with Sedric relationship was lovely, I wished they had more to do in this book.
Selden's parts of the book were a highlight for me and I'm excited to see what kind of role Chassim might play in the final trilogy.
Overall, I enjoyed reading these books as I went but the payoff for everything just didn't quite hit as hard as it usually does with Hobb. If I ever come to do a re-read of RotE, I may end of skipping this series.
And now back to my boy Fitz!!!
