The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

4.0

This novel was a true surprise both because of its rich worldbuilding and interesting, simple but a bit vague magic system. However, the author has done a tremendous job in outlining every single piece of her world so the laws of magic, even if bore some new questions, didn't make me feel as if I didn't like the story or found it boring.

It's a coming-of-age tale of a dark asha, that is a dark witch who can be thought of as a necromancer, and the setting is inspired by Chinese and Laotian culture. The magic system is inspired from Zoroastrianism and I loved googling things like what's a tour or an asha and coming up with so many intriguing answers!

The writing is simple but very transparent and clear as if it cuts glass.

The main issue with this book was how much of a setup it ultimately was. There was too much fluffing sometimes about what the asha wore and the way they were trained and little elaboration on their combat or on the heroine's feelings. However, the book does lean more towards the middle-grade genre and this could also be justifiable.

All in all, I felt like my expectations as a reader were defied since I didn't feel I got a closure with the ending (even if a closure was being built up from the very first page due to a narration technique Chupeco uses) but I loved the flip of the premise and the heroine's struggles. I'll definitely continue this series!
