It’s just okay. Imagine a debut like Shadow and Bone that’s super quick to read by an author that hasn’t quite found their footing yet. For a debut novel, it’s pretty good. The characters are kinda forgettable and some things aren’t really as fleshed out as I’d hoped. I think Taylor was on to something writing this, but it needed just a little bit more work to really be a standout debut. However, if Taylor refines her craft a bit I can totally see her up there with Leigh Bardugo and Elizabeth Lim, authors who also had a bit of a weaker start but now are known for beautiful works.
