Undine [by] Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué
by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué
This is a simple story, but it shows what society of that time thought was important: loyalty and (for women) purity. It's a mix of morality tale and fairy tale. The version I read (not this one, but this was the closest in page length) had a handful of nice illustrations in it, but wasn't overly flowery language. I can't find a record of who translated the version I read.
