A mixed bag of action, emotion and frustration

Spirit Bound brings readers deeper into the whirlwind life of Rose Hathaway. As always there are loads of intense action, lots of emotional twists, a few long-awaited developments and the political intrigue woven into the plot adds some much-needed depth.

This installment felt a bit uneven. Some character choices were frustrating and certain storylines dragged when they should have soared. While there are moments of real emotional impact, others felt repetitive. It often felt like the characters were circling the same issues without much growth.

Rose is as fierce and headstrong as ever, qualities that make her both compelling and, at times, maddening. Her impulsive decisions continue to drive the plot forward, but some of her actions in this book felt repetitive or reckless in ways that undermined the growth we've seen in previous installments. Meanwhile, Lissa gets more time in the spotlight and while her arc does develop, it still feels like she’s often a step behind Rose in terms of emotional weight and complexity.

There are major stakes and high-risk plans that move the story in a bold direction, but not all of them land smoothly. Certain twists felt more like setup for the finale than satisfying in their own right and some romantic tension that has simmered throughout the series felt drawn out here without enough payoff to feel fully earned.

That said, Spirit Bound does an effective job of raising the stakes and deepening the world’s lore, particularly in terms of Moroi politics and spirit magic. It’s a necessary entry in the series, even if it doesn’t quite hit the emotional highs of earlier books.
