Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey

4.0

Just plain fun, and in a space opera that's what counts the most. Is it super hardcore science fiction? Of course not, it's Space Opera, the level of technology is exactly where it needs to be for some good human based conflict with giant space ships.

The ideas are a good frame for the conflict we're thrown into, the story zips by with plenty actually happening to the characters. Sure there's some cliche in here. The foreshadowing sometimes jumps out and punches you in the face while the characters that should be noticing such let it pass by as if nothing happened. The sheer amount of troubling events the main characters get into in serial feels like it hinges a bit to much on the Deus Ex Machina behind it all wanting exciting things to happen.

But none of that is enough to stop this story, which is often smart where it needs to be, fun where it needs to be, and just generally engaging and exciting throughout.
