They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

5.0

I loved it. I think the concept was beautiful. The author managed to build a whole world for the reader through random civilians point of views. I loved seeing how all the lives connected and how they led to the end of others. It appears most deaths in this book were due to the existence of Death-Cast. It was great following to characters and trying to sympathise with the feelings of regret and waste (of their own lives).

It’s crazy to think all the events of Mateo & Rufus living their best last day were the events that led to their deaths. This seems to be a running theme throughout too. Without that alert they would both be alive but devoid of eachother and the growth they both went through.

“No matter when it happens, we all have our endings. No one goes on, but what we leave behind keeps us alive for someone else.”

“I would’ve loved you if we had more time.”

“Did finding each other kill us?”
“We were going to die before we knew each other,” Mateo says.
“I know. But maybe this is how it was always written in stone or the stars or whatever: Two dudes meet. They fall for each other. They die”

“I was raised to be honest, but the truth can be complicated. It doesn’t matter if the truth won’t make a mess, sometimes the words don’t come out until you’re alone. Even that’s not guaranteed. Sometimes the truth is a secret you’re keeping from yourself because living a lie is easier.”

“Thank you for everything, Dad.
I’ll be brave, and I’ll be okay.
I love you from here to there.
Mateo”
