Gilded Mountain: A Novel by Kate Manning

3.25

I really wanted to love this.

The setting is beautifully done: the early 1900s with the contrast of rich and poor, the expansion in America’s West, the naïveté of social progress.

I’m not sure how a novel about unionism, violence, class disparity, love, death and family could end up falling flat for me. The characters seemed almost like ghosts - strong in theory, but unfortunately not substantial enough to be fulfilling.
