Something Wiccan This Way Comes: Book 1 Wheel of the Year Mysteries by Michalea Moore, Michalea Moore

3.0

I received an advance review copy for free in return for my honest review.

Maren Lillenthal is down on her luck. The young socialite loses everything after investing her money with someone shady and has to return home with her tail between her legs. She chafes at the idea of living in Riverton, where she was always the odd girl out after her parent's demise. It doesn't help that she's a witch. The last thing she expects when she returns home is to meet tech guru and billionaire Cyrus Harp. Sparks fly between these two almost immediately, but will their new love be thrown off course?

While I enjoyed this book, there were things about it I didn't love. For one, Cyrus says "yeah" in almost every sentence. It was enough to drive me bonkers. I almost stopped reading more than once because of it. It wasn't a cute little affectation. It was honestly annoying and pulled me out of the novel each time, especially because it tended to be tacked on to the end of every statement.

I enjoyed the stuff about tarot in the book and found it fascinating. I wanted more about her practice and things like that. I also wanted more about her past and how it shaped her. We got glimpses of it and I found Maren to be a compelling character. I just wanted a little more.

I did think that the book took a while to get to conflict. Half the book is about how Maren lost all of her money and then met this tech guy and started a romance. Then we're thrown into the mystery and it's rather implausible how that all goes down. The police in this book are awful if their first thought wasn't to go through technology with a fine tooth comb. It's up to Maren and Cyrus to do that? It felt too pat and easy and silly to me.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I'd probably read the next one in the series as well.
