Stonkingly good sci-fi! The worldbuilding in this is so exciting, from the geology based technology to the religiously structured society, these ideas were all so cool and painted in such an interesting way. The high style of language, almost biblical, worked perfectly for me as it suited the world so well, as well as suiting a narrative that is frequently concerned with the role of rhetoric in ideological conflicts.
Misery as a protagonist is so intriguing to follow as she goes on such an arc - if you're familiar with the history of Joan of Arc then you'll be a little clued in to the structure events may take but Neon Yang definitely managed to inject enough new elements that the story didn't feel predictable to me.
Most of all, I loved the nuance of this conflict and the way your understanding grew and changed as events unfolded (particularly enjoyed the well placed "interludes" - any time it seemed like the conflict might be a little too black and white those interludes reminded me that reality rarely is). Truly an exciting space opera, I must now get my hands on the author's novella series!
