Moon of the Turning Leaves by Waubgeshig Rice

4.0

Moon of the Turning Leaves takes place ten years after Moon of the Crusted Snow. Faced with dwindling resources, the survivors of an Anishinaabe community send a scouting party to explore the world for a new home. This slow-burn sequel provides more clarity on the apocalyptic event of the first novel. The story is rich with cultural tradition, much of which is centred on a peaceful relationship with nature. Friendships are strong and the father-daughter bond is warming. The trek, with its haunting imagery and small clues, creates a feeling of uneasiness associated with the unknown. The antagonistic force fits in the world building when revealed. The ending of this novel isn't as climactic as expected, but the story is haunting nonetheless and is a satisfying read.
