Turn the Ship Around! by L. David Marquet

Marquet delivers both an impactful teaching style and entertaining read in this life-changing book on leadership.
This book has made a tremendous impact on my leadership style even after a few days. Though in the book he calls the leadership approach "leader-leader", on his website and YouTube channel, he calls it Intent-Based Leadership.
I originally found this book because I was trying to figure out how I could motivate some team members who were not as engaged as I hoped. I gained so much more from this book. It has truly helped me put words around some leadership concepts I already exhibited, while challenging me to fully embrace Intent-Based Leadership on my team.
His writing style follows this very effective pattern:
1. He presents the reader with a question to open our minds to the concept.
2. He illustrates the concept through real-world examples from his past.
3. He concisely defines the concept with a consistent pattern (... is a mechanism for control, competence, or clarity).
4. He closes the chapter with thought-provoking questions
This approach has helped me to quickly identify areas of growth for myself. It has also helped me remember the core concepts and internalize them.
By far, this has been the most helpful and entertaining book on leadership that I've read and I plan to refer back to it and the other resources he's made available online.
