Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare
5.0
SPOILER ALERT (sorry couldn't help myself)
I am so broken after this book.
Okay let me step back. I loved this book so much. It's NOT by any means a depressing book. The plot was so detailed I loved every single thing that happened. Jem and Tessa's engagement, stuff with Jessie, Will and Tessa's TENSION, and everything else. I even loved the whole deal with Jem dying but not. Somewhere deep inside of me knew that he wasn't dead, simply because when they switched point of view's to the Institute dwellers no one was really grieving. However, the emotion that was shown through Will and Tess still was very real (about Jem not other stuff...) and I thought that Cassandra Clare pulled off the plot twist really well. And I think the idea of saving Jem by making him a Silent Brother was a good idea. Of course, it broke my heart knowing that he would have to live like that and frankly I would choose a mortal death over that lifestyle. Especially since I'd be loosing the people I loved either way. Nevertheless, it was a good decision on Cassandra's part.
I was SO HAPPY with the way the book ended. A few losses (Jem and others) and a few wins. All ends were tied up. All the twists and turns made sense. And they made connections to the first few Mortal Instruments. it was PERFECT.
and then i read the epilogue.
and let me tell you i CRIED for a good half hour. Here's my problem.
I first broke when I heard about Will's death. I didn't even cry with anything about Jem, and the minute I heard about Will's harmless mortal death I couldn't;t hold it in. (I guess this proves my favorite loll.) But I know that I get so attached to characters, especially broken ones, and Will (like Four and Keefe and Katniss) was very close to my fiction-loving heart. Will had gone through SO MUCH in his life, in my opinion worse than tortured Tessa and sick Jem. Emotional and mental pain is worse than physical. And I'm not just talking about his unrequited love for Tess. He lived YEARS pushing everyone away in fear of their wellbeing. Imagine living like that? It's a wonder he lived as long as he did. (Honestly I think if not for Jem he probably would have ended it but that's another story.) And hearing about how when he died he was held by his closest loves, Tessa and Jem, I couldn't hold it in.
BUT THEN Cassandra Clare had the AUDACITY to ruin everything.
Before you say anything in the comments below I DONT FRICKIN CARE that Jem might have been important in later books, so they had to save him. Or that Will wasn't as important because of fill-in-the-blank.
Basically I am pissed at Cassandra Clare because she couldn't make a decision. She finished off everything and it was perfect and even with Will's death I could have lived with it because, being a dystopian fiction lover, I have lived through heartbreaking deaths like this, no matter the difficulty. But she just said NOPE and 1) randomly made Jem mortal and 2) made Tessa "feel" for him again even after all these years. IN THE SPAN OF TWO PAGES. Like at this point might as well just scrap the whole book because it was all for nothing.
Tessa spent the entire series deciding between two boys, Jem and Will. We've all read those books, we know how it goes. And even if she said that she loved both of them, one of the should have been more brotherly or friendly or even past love-ey. But Cassandra is making it sound like Tessa is romantically in love with two people, and even after she suffered Will's mortal death she can just say "okay your turn" and go run after Jem who we KNOW is going to die the same way.
I KNOW someone is going to disagree with me and by all means let me know what you think down below. I would love to hear your thoughts and debate with you about this. Or is you wholehearedly agree, be brave and come like it ahaha. Honestly I don't know what to feel myself.
In conclusion
*sigh*
I will be rating this book 5 stars. Because I loved this book SO MUCH. There is no doubt in my mind that Cassandra Clare is a tremendous author was amazing talent and the ability to draw readers into the story, If she didn't I wouldn't have written this novel of a review. But if I was to rate the way she ended the book? NEGATIVE 12.
Sorry not sorry. It's the truth.
I am honestly scared to read the rest of the series. Mostly because Will won't be there but Jessa will be. Nevertheless, READ THIS BOOK.
