jschosh 's review for:
The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes
by Neil Gaiman
So my boyfriend's really (like really really) into comics so I thought I'd give one a chance because why not. Verdict? Pretty effing cool.
I chose this one kind of at random but I figured it'd be best to start with something 1) popular, 2) written by Neil Gaiman, and 3) not about superheroes (which, honestly, I didn't know existed). To further highlight my pleb status, I didn't fully understand the way issues and volumes worked so I actually finished this a little while ago but I assumed the first chunk of the comic was issues 1-12 because that's what my download included.
But moving on to the actual comic itself, like I said, it was awesome. It's a combination of fantasy and horror and it's pretty dark which I love. The story follows Dream, aka the sandman, aka Morpheus, aka like 17 other names, and all of his ~wacky adventures on earth as well as in the dreamworld. (I'm just kidding about the wacky part though like seriously this is some intense shit). It also included guest appearances from some DC superheroes which was fun (I'm not really interested in an entire comic about superheroes but I can get down with them as a guest star).
Well I'm probably going to read the rest of the volumes now (is that how people do it? Read them all in a row? In order to have quote-unquote read the comic do you need to read every issue?) so be on the lookout for further reviews.
