I really wanted to love this book since i loved spinning silver so much but this book was… okay.
Novik’s writing was beautiful as always and that’s why it’s 3 stars and not lower.
The magic system is not great, nothing was ever explained and our main lead seemed to just know how to use magic and somehow always succeeded and never fails at anything ever? Going so far as to be even more advanced (in some areas) than a literal hundred+ year old dragon? Who is a mage? The most powerful mage?

I also didn’t like the romance in this story at all. Personally I believe abusive relationships are dumb, horrible and a huge turn off. So that’s a no from me.

None of the characters are likeable, and not in like a good way where I am reading a story full of morally grey characters. No. I did not give a single crap about anyone in this book. They all literally could be replaced by wooden logs and I’d probably enjoy reading that more.

There are good parts in this story though. I loved the scenes in the forest and the dark magic aspect. But that’s it.
All in all, it was just okay.
