Hellboy Omnibus Volume 1: Seed of Destruction by Mike Mignola, John Byrne
5.0

One of the things I’ve really liked about this graphic novel, and that I have to mention first, is the drawing style. Simple and easily recognizable, it went so well with the story and the characters that I can’t imagine it any other way. I’ve also loved the use of color, creating a dark and eerie atmosphere that went with the plot but that didn’t lack on vibrant colors.
The plots of the different stories connected between each other were also great. In just this volume we get to know how Hellboy came to be, how he works and what is his main purpose. A very complete volume by all accounts, by the end of it we have quite a deep understanding of Hellboy and the organization he works for. I’ve enjoyed how aspects of different mythologies were used here to exalt the story. All the monsters and enemies that appear in this volume have a great character design, but also nice roots in history and culture that truly add another dimension to them.
Continuing with the characters, Hellboy is the antihero that you truly want to root for. He is just a demon doing his best, and the reader gets that. His sarcastic humor and how he is good with violence but never uses it as his first retort, and his loyalty towards his friends make Hellboy great. The other characters are as interesting, Abe or Liz, to name a few, I can’t wait to read more about them.
This omnibus immersed me in a world of fantasy, legends and action, that hooked me on every page and made me take long pauses to appreciate the art, without it feeling like I was delaying the reading. I will no doubt read the rest of the volumes in this series.
