It was sad and there was a continuous deterioration in the development of the main character. At some point, it did get hopeful but we observe that as he did not address his people pleasing tendencies and fear of humans, he fell down the seemingly bottomless pit of terrible self-esteem and mental health.
I like how the book goes straight to the point to showcase these feelings. Usually these themes - specifically the direct effect of being a people pleaser on one’s self - are rarely discussed. I think the way the book ended stating that it was his father’s fault is pretty important. I think it shows the role of an emotionally present parent. But it also shows how these themes were viewed almost a century ago. It’s amazing how the book is still relevant today especially to people who might, in some way, relate to the feelings of the main character.
