I enjoyed reading this book, largely because I was able to sift through its words and hold on to what resonated. The many passages of simple wisdom as well as the whimsy and adventure were my favorite parts. Santiago goes on quite the emotional journey too and I was surprised to see the books acceptance of emotions and the human condition.

I’m not religious, but the ideals reflected in the book were still accessible to me. I found myself frequently setting the book down to ponder what I’d just read. I have a new fresh perspective for my life and my goals.

I personally didn’t enjoy the ending, but I still walked away with some interesting new ideas and enjoyed reading this. Coelho is very skilled at bringing his worlds to life, I felt like I was there in the plains of Spain and the vast deserts of Egypt.

It’s important to note there is a lot of xenophobia particularly in the beginning of the book. There are sexist ideals. There are predominantly Muslim characters and I don’t know enough to discern the quality of their representation.
