The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey
by Trenton Lee Stewart
I expected to like this book much more than I did. I loved the first one and everyone who’s read this sequel said the Perilous Journey wasn’t a whit behind its predecessor. I don’t know, then, if it was something about my mood or my preferences that swayed my opinion, but I didn’t find this book nearly as charming as The Mysterious Benedict Society.
This sequel is more action-packed than the first, more full of adventure. For most people, that’s probably a good thing. But I thrive more on character development and witty dialogue — I tend to glaze over “exciting” action scenes whether it be in movies or in books — and so this book just wasn’t as fun as the first. There were still exciting moments of watching the foursome use their unique talents to solve interesting puzzles, but the "climactic" ending fell a little bit flat for me. I felt like there were significantly fewer twists and riddles than the first one, and I missed that.
Nevertheless, I’m still planning on reading the third one, once I get my hands on it (we’re on a long hold list at the library right now) — and I still recommend that you read The Mysterious Benedict Society if you haven’t yet!
