The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan
5.0
Buddy read this with Carrot! :D
The fast-paced start definitely catches your attention and the amazing details and characters with deep personalities keep you reading the rest. At the beginning, I felt bad for Tyson trying to prove himself to Percy and anyone else, and it was surprising that Poseidon decided to claim him as his son, especially so soon.
It was also clever of Rick Riordan to connect Grover and Percy so that it felt more urgent for Percy to rescue him. I also think the Greek mythology was really well tied in to everything that happened, like how Hermes played parts in it as well as Circe. I wonder what Thalia’s attitude will be like toward Percy, and what will happen the prophecy.
My favorite character is still Annabeth, I love that she always was there to help Percy, especially with fighting all the monsters. My favorite part was probably when Percy saved Annabeth from the Sirens, or when they won the chariot race together. I’m also excited for when season two of the show comes out, since I enjoyed the first season. Some parts of the book were a bit cliché, like Kronos rising bit by bit and needing a servant to help him. I also think that Grover should have been included a bit more than he was, especially near the end. Other than that, it was very well-written and I really enjoyed all of the characters and storyline.
Summary: Percy is at his school when monsters show up and Tyson, one of Percy’s friends, defeats them. Annabeth, Percy, and Tyson go to Camp Half-Blood only to find out that Chiron is fired and that monsters can enter the camp now that Thalia’s tree is poisoned, and so Percy faces two giant metal bulls with the other campers.
Tyson is claimed as a son of Poseidon, and later they work on a chariot for the race together. Percy dreams about Grover, who is trapped by a cyclops in the Sea of Monsters named Polyphemus. During the chariot race, Stymphalian birds attack, and Percy and Annabeth ward them off. Later, Hermes gives Percy a few gifts and helps him travel with Annabeth and Tyson to the Sea of Monsters by a cruise ship, but they have to use hippocampi to get to the ship.
When they do arrive, they realize that Luke is on board and he captures them with his guards, showing them where Kronos is being restored to power bit by bit. The escape using a lifeboat and a gift from Hermes, and face a Hydra. Clarisse rescues them with a ship from her father and they head to the Sea of Monsters. When they enter, they split up with Tyson and Clarisse, and get lured in to Circe’s Spa, where Circe tricks Annabeth and Percy.
Afterward, the both of them sail past the Sirens, and Percy ends up having to save Annabeth from their songs. Later, when they reach Polyphemus‘s island, they find Clarisse already there and trapped with Grover. Annabeth and Percy come up with a plan to save both of them, and manage to do it with the help of Tyson, who was able to make it to the island on his hippocampus, Rainbow.
When they finally defeat Polyphemus who sunk the ship they had, Percy and Tyson call for the hippocampi to come there, and they take them to Miami. They let Clarisse take a plane back to camp by herself with the Golden Fleece since it was her quest in the first place, and Luke shows up and confronts the rest of them, only to realize he is too late. Percy tricks Luke into admitting what he’d done in front of the Iris message to Dionysus, and so Dionysus agrees to let Chiron back.
After Luke and Percy duel, Chiron himself comes with other centaurs and rescues the group and brings them to camp half-blood. Chiron is reinstated as the activities director, and they continue with the chariot races. Tyson gives Percy a watch that can transform into a shield, and Annabeth and Percy win the chariot race with a lot of Tyson’s help. Poseidon gives Percy the message to brace himself, and later they realize that the Fleece has not only healed Thalia’s tree but brought her back entirely, and that Thalia could now be apart of the prophecy.
