Ghostland: An American History in Haunted Places
by Colin Dickey
This would have been much more riveting if I hadn't spent a year listening to podcasts like Aaron Mahnke's Lore. Yet it's not Colin Dickey's fault I'm so familiar with some of these hauntings. He did a great job with the historical and sociological aspects of hauntings and included some good stories, which is exactly what I was looking for from the book.
I also appreciate that Dickey was willing to examine the racial elements of our haunting stories in the U.S., sometimes fairly critically. That itself could probably be an entire book but I'm glad he didn't ignore it. I also appreciated the breadth of geography.
I listened to the audiobook, however, and I personally really disliked the narrator! The way he pronounced "white" annoyed me every time, and his going between extra dry erudite narrator to doing historical voices also made me side-eye a little bit.
Definitely interested in Colin Dickey's newest book after this one.
