This was pretty intriguing.... was it laughable at times? Yes. But it still kept me interested.

Max best book bf I've read about IN A HOT MINUTE.

------------------------------------------

Okay, review time! TBH I don't really know what to say about this book but I'll try my best to form a cohesive thought at 9am with no coffee. This book was great. I loved the world building the book gave us as we had two contrasting countries and got to see the different environments, people, and political climates.

The magic system was a bit confusing but to be honest I was going through some family drama while reading this so my mind might've been all over the place while reading this. I wonder if the author will explain where the magic comes from in future books.. She probably explained it in this one but again my mind was lowkey occupied. Nevertheless I enjoyed Tisaanah's illusion and mind influencing magic. It's nothing I have read before but seeing it blend together and blend into something new was pretty cool. The magic system here lowkey reminds me of alchemy but if it were more magic based instead of science based. Max's fire powers were also really cool to see.

As for the character's Max and Tisaanah.... I loved both of them so much. It's been a HOT minute since I've liked both the FMC and her love interest together and as separate people.

Tisaanah is a slave in the beginning of the book and it was lowkey ingenious of the author to make her realize what being a slave meant while being naive at the same time. She's 21(?) at the beginning of the book but she's been continuously been in one place, dependent on one horrible person, so when she has the realization and breaks free from her chains it's truly a moment of "wow ik I'm going to love this character." Her training arc and seeing her interact with a country completely foreign to her made her relatable as she was scared but curious. She has a cause she's so desperate to fight for that girly won't let any one person, language, or government get in her way.
The scene where she drafts up the blood pact is probably my favorite because she acknowledges that The Orders are using her because she can wield Reshaye but she's smart enough to make demands of her own like going back to save her friends that are still slaves and freeing the person she loves from The Orders.
Tisaanah only loses points towards the end in a specific scene which made her a bit unlikable to me.
This woman has spent months training physically and with magic and then let's her ass get BITCH SLAPPED??? HUHHHH??? Like the villain beats her ass for a hot minute before she remembers who she is and I'm like... bruh bsffr the minute a man who previously SAed touches me they're dead.... like girly had to rely on Reshaye to do the damn dirty work ugh...

Then we have Max. UGHHHHHHHHHH WHEN GRUMPY MMC ISN'T AN ASSHOLE.

I haven't enjoyed a male love interest this much in a minute. Max has so much depth in this story it's almost impossible to hate him. In the beginning he's practically a war veteran who doesn't want to train Tisaanah but throughout their time together he sees just how determined she is and admires her. Through her sprit he gets the motivation to finally stop being an asshole (lol) and trains her. I wouldn't say this is an enemies to lovers romance but more of a hate to lovers with slow burn. It takes a while for the two characters to trust each other but when Tisaanah finally finds out why Max hates The Orders and doesn't want to go back she understands him.
Reshaye is WILD for that family massacre scene... I'm really surprised Max didn't have a crazier crash out ngl... but his crash out was valid... cuz wit Reshaye... wtf
Once Max finally starts to show he cares it's just like all the dislike goes out the window.. he has a little bit of a savior complex but lowkey I can't blame him for it... for the most part tho he just lets Tisaanah do her thing and is happily along for the ride and I LOVE it!

I can't wait to read more about them as a couple. Hopefully next book I'll be in a better headspace to remember more about the magic and world building...

I did take off a star because of the Tisaanah scene but also because there's a plot point that got lost in the sauce... I might add points back if I see it in book 2... but the other point is... Tisaanah's main reason for joining The Orders is to save her friends that are still in slavery AND to save her mom and her people but... we never see Tisaanah's tribe... like where are they? They die in the mines? I'm so confused and it was like never brought up again so... yea I'll add back points if author addresses it but I just found that to be weird (and lazy writing).
