Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
5.0
After finishing this book I saw it had of negative feedback but I thought that this book was really good. (Little rant coming up...) I think lots of people take young adult books too seriously when reviewing them and just need to appreciate them for what they are, rather than comparing them to every other book ever written. I thought that most of the criticism that this book got was rather unfair as it was, in my opinion, a rather well written book for this genre especially for the time it was written.
My critiques:
Of course, as can be expected, there are many a cliché in the story. The main character is a girl who isn't good at sport and there are mysterious dark and handsome male characters for days. Some of the lines are a bit outdated like the mentions of 'My Space' but it doesn't distract much from the story. Nora felt older than 16 to me, I kept thinking of her as closer to 18 because that just made more sense to me.
What I loved about this book:
Overall I really love this book! I liked the mystery and fantasy aspects because they weren't too over the top. Lots of books in the genre are really predictable but I didn't really know exactly where this book was going to end (or who the 'bad guy' was) which is great because it kept me engaged with the plot. I liked the way information was revealed to the reader through Nora as it wasn't a long boring drag but more of a 'figure it out along the way' kind of story. I appreciated that Nora didn't have a long winded "OMG supernatural people are real?!?" moment because they are so overdone and boring at this point. I liked the detail that the minor characters had in the story such as Vee and Nora's mum, even the housekeeper having a German accent was a small detail that, along with all the other small details, made for a realistic and enjoyable story.
I was surprised to find out that this is a series and not a stand alone because of how the first book finished. I thought it was neatly packaged and would be a good stand alone. I hope that it wasn't made into a series simply because the first book was good because that always leads to worse books as the series progresses. I look forward to reading the next book though!
