I actually really enjoyed this book at the start but as I kept reading I found I was enjoying it less and less until what could have been a four star book turned into a 2.5.
This book has a really interesting premise but its bogged down by uninteresting characters that, despite being 17, act like they’re 12, inconsistent world-building, and dialogue that made me cringe every few pages. Not to mention the mystery gets solved out of nowhere with little to no real information gathered by the characters.
This book seems like it couldn’t decide who it wanted it’s audience to be; the plot and level of violence is well suited for its intended young adult audience but the dialogue and characterization felt very much like it belonged in a middle grade/children’s book.
All that being said I don’t think Darcie Little Badger is a bad writer by any means, there is definitely the makings of a really good book here but it just missed the mark for me in too many ways. I hope she continues to write because there are some really great ideas in this book that make me excited for what she might do in the future.
