The kind of novel that can be called an achievement. I've read Ozeki's two previous novels, both good but not spectacular so didn't rush out to read this book despite the good reviews. Thankfully it was referenced at a writing class last weekend, held up as an example of an amazing novel. Indeed it is. There is so much going for this novel: a super compelling protagonist (sixteen year old Nao, the author of the discovered diary), rich themes (time, life and death, companionship, the relationship between writer and reader), and a compelling plot. A beautiful and interesting novel that is absolutely incredible.
