The Witch Hunter
by Virginia Boecker
Full Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
My Thoughts: The cover of The Witch Hunter is what initially drew my eye. The description made it sound even more like my kind of book and then I somehow managed to get a copy from Netgalley. The Witch Hunter is actually one of my Anticipated Reads for June (look out for that post). Sometimes, you can judge a book by its cover.
I absolutely loved the main character, Elizabeth Grey. She’s easily one of my favorite female characters. I liked a lot of the other characters, but there wasn’t a lot of character development. I realize the first book in a series generally hooks you into reading the series and you flesh out the characters later, but I would’ve gladly given up some of the action in order to learn more about the characters. Elizabeth’s burgeoning friendship with George is one of the most entertaining things I’ve read in a while and I hope it continues throughout the series.
I thought the story itself was a bit rushed. There was definitely action and it was enjoyable, but there was a lot going on in a very short amount of time. I actually got confused towards the end of the story and had to go back to re-read that part. There was just too much action and not enough quiet moments.
The Witch Hunter was a very quick read for me. It wasn’t particularly short; I was just so into it that I didn’t want to put it down. It wasn’t perfect, but what book is (besides Harry Potter)? There were character flaws and interactions that bothered me, but not enough to dim my overall enjoyment of The Witch Hunter.
I definitely enjoyed reading The Witch Hunter and will probably purchase a copy to re-read before the second book comes out in 2016. If you enjoy supernatural books or books about the Salem Witch Trials, I would highly recommend The Witch Hunter. It doesn’t take place in Salem, but it’s got that sort of feel to it.
