Fortunately, the Milk
by Neil Gaiman
This is a fantastic, exaggerated tale that a father tells his children about why it took him so long to run to the store and fetch some milk. Involved are pirates, dinosaurs, ponies, vampires, aliens, and a volcano god-all of which end up being connected through time travel. I could not agree more with Cory Doctorow in the front of my copy: "An astounding tale. An absolute delight to read out loud. One part Douglas Adams, one part Doctor Who, and one part The Usual Suspects."
This would be a great book for 2nd-5th grade, and I think it would be best shared as a class read-aloud, because some students would be able to hear different voices in their heads, but others would need someone else to illustrate all of the wonderful nuances of the characters.
