Read as part of a book club revisiting friends’ childhood favorites. Yikes. The plot had me hooked, but often against my own will — the book’s world and characters are mired in a dreary lack of morality with little escape in sight, with nonchalant police violence being the recurring star of the show. Find something that’s not about a cop breaking poor people’s arms. It’s redeemed slightly by the endearing tight-knit friendships that form among the central characters.
