Existential Kink: Unmask Your Shadow and Embrace Your Power (a Method for Getting What You Want by Getting Off on What You Don't) by Carolyn Elliott

informative inspiring reflective fast-paced

3.0

The mood is self-coaching, self-help, connecting with your higher self. There was a lot of repetition in this book. While the points made were valid, and I feel the content has helped me move past some issues, 3 stars for not really going deeper. And the 'testimonial-stories'? Were kind of weird and ridiculous. Of course, every reviewer praised the author's specific EK system. I'd be interested in hearing from people who have diverse experiences, or at least some acknowledgement of other factors in people's lives that can contribute to their success or failure with these ideas.

Overall, I think when you're doing shadow work and changing how you see yourself, it can take a lot of support, depending on who you are and your experience. Like therapy and strong friendships. I believe Elliott does mention something about getting help if you're going through depression in a Q&A section at the end of the book. I question if mental health could have been addressed with more sensitivity throughout, instead of all the repetition.
