The author creates an atmospheric setting; evidently, the Scottish islands are familiar territory to him. I find the ever-present brooding clouds, mists and sea fogs omnipresent and oppressive. But, I guess this was intentional. I have read his trilogy that succeeded this book, which tends to be formulaic. Nevertheless, if murder and autopsies are your bag, you'll find plenty to enjoy. This is worrying me now because I've read four of Peter May's books, and I never believed I was drawn to the grim and gory- he must be doing something right!
