The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate
by Jacqueline Kelly
A perfect book from start to finish -- 11-year old Calpurnia Tate is a great heroine, a precocious naturalist-in-the-making in spite of her mother's efforts to train her to be a housewife. This would be a great book for children, as well, encouraging young women in the sciences, and a delightful slice of history, in that it vividly depicted life in Texas in 1899.
