ok so. so many people have recommended this book to me, and this was the second time i've tried to read it. i just was not immediately sucked in by the characters or the storyline, which was a bit confusing. i also just found the worldbuilding to be not explained super well, so it did feel a bit like slogging through the first 75% of this book. i also just felt that there were too many characters for me to really deeply care about most of them, and also made it a bit hard to keep track of who was doing what. i would say honestly that the last quarter of this book really saved it a bit for me, and actually made me like the main characters more than I had for the rest of this book. and maybe possibly convinced me to read the next one. because up until that point, i was definitely not continuing this series. i would say this book is way more about the vibes than it is about the characters or plot or mystery, so maybe i should have read this in the fall when i was in a more spooky mood, instead of the dead middle of summer.
