the transition between books from heist to full blown political intrigue was jarring at first, but i really came to enjoy this!!! i overall prefer the breakneck pace of the first book over the slower pace of its sequel, but this was still a whole lot of fun. i loved the worldbuilding and the deeper exploration into other magic systems in this universe. and while i didn't think elend really earned his place and relationships with the rest of the gang at the beginning of the novel because of the one year timeskip, he quickly became a favorite of mine with his amazing character arc.
