Deadhouse Gates
by Steven Erikson
Erikson's prose is, as many people say, much improved in this book. He is really great at showing horrific events without feeling like he's going for shock value or trying to moralize. His depictions of the effects war can have is really interesting.
This is a very bleak book, even more than Gardens of the Moon (which just felt more mysterious to me) but it never feels like too much. A Song of Ice and Fire sometimes just felt like misery porn to me but this series doesn't and I guess it's because of Erikson's depictions of these horrific events that they feel empathetic and not just to shock you. Also, Erikson's humor is always so funny. These characters make me laugh so much.
I really missed the characters from the previous novel but also liked the new ones, especially the relationship between Icarium and Mappo. I hope I don't have to wait long to see more of them.
I would say that Gardens of the Moon kept me more interested throughout the whole thing, whereas Deadhouse Gates has starts and stops and one hell of an ending. The ending makes me appreciate the slower bits more but overall I probably enjoyed Gardens of the Moon more, and I realize I'm in like a 1% minority on that.
