alkalinehart 's review for:
The Way of Kings Part One
by Brandon Sanderson
3.5/5
After devouring the delicious fantasy trilogy that was the Mistborn series, I was probably always going to be a little disappointed with the #stormlightarchive series. But I didn't expect to be so underwhelmed by parts of this.
It should be said that Sanderson didn't want The Way of Kings to be split over two books, but it is, and suffers because of it. I'm sure the rest of the series will pick up, as the groundwork that is laid points to a great arc. And it's Sanderson so it's still 3.5/5, like.
Weirdly, despite being let down by this, my favourite Sanderson characters to date are probably found here. The male lead is clever but with flaws that have actual consequences. It also slays in the #bechdeltest and the student/teacher trope is nicely worked to create a new dynamic.
There are just too many sections that go nowhere within the confines of this book, for me. It's definitely very readable, but again because Mistborn was so good, standards are high. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series and realising the wait was worth it.
Expect trust issues, magic, battles, spirits, spies, subterfuge and a feeling that the best is yet to come.
