Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is one of the best modernizations of classic fantasy. Focusing on friendship instead of a hard magic system and immaculately planned world, it somewhat sticks out in the modern fantasy landscape. However, it's prose and the warm feeling of Hogwarts are so reminiscent of Middle Earth, Narnia, and Earthsea.

Rowling's current political leanings make a few appearances in this work, but for the most part, they are absent.

Listening to the British version of this story was quite a treat. I loved hearing the differences between this edition and the one I grew up with.
