The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall

I really liked this!

This is the first time I have read high fantasy in a few years and I definitely think it encouraged me to dip into this more again. It had me fooled as a book for a younger audience but was definitely more mature without losing its creativity.
I really think it's a good book that has a good and consistent element of excitement and suspense all throughout! Despite a lot of the story happening and coming together in the last part of the book, the others don't seem slow in comparison but like a necessary build up and preparation.
I like the characters, that they are grey and flawed and not at all what they seem like. It makes them interesting and intriguing, because people you thought you would hate you end up having a soft spot for and vise versa. I appreciated getting to know different perspectives, that changed throughout to go hand in hand with the changing story.
I am curious if there will be a second one with the way it ended, since to me the last chapter sounds like an open end.
