The Dream Peddler
by Martine Fournier Watson
I thought the premise of this book was intriguing and the writing was beautiful. The Dream Peddler is about a traveling salesman, Robert Owens, who travels to a small town around the time of the disappearance of the Dawson's little boy, Ben. Robert stays in the town for a while and sets up shop; his business is selling dreams to the townspeople, and he quickly gains business. The story follows multiple viewpoints throughout the months that Owens is in town, their desires, their lives, etc.
Reading the summary of this book, I thought it was going to focus more on Evie Dawson and the effects of losing her son. It turns out this was only a very small portion of the book, even her transactions with the Dream Peddler didn't happen until much later in the book, and even then they weren't significant to the story. I feel like instead of following the Dawson's, The Dream Peddler followed a variety of townspeople and looked into their inner lives and wants. It really felt at a certain point that there wasn't much of a storyline at all.
The ending drove me crazy!! There was really no closure to any of the characters' plights. Cora, Christina, the Dawson's, there was no resolution to any of their stories.
Regardless of there not being much of a structured storyline, I found the writing for this book so dreamy. I loved the descriptions of the town and the people that inhabited it, I loved the way Watson wrote about the characters' inner feelings. I truly enjoyed this book, however I wish there had been a resolution at the end, and that there was more direction with what was actually happening in the story.
