Captive in the Dark
by CJ Roberts
I'm honestly shocked by all of the good reviews of this story. I read it in e-book version, and not only did I find it full of poor grammar, misspellings, and other things editors are supposed to find, but I found the story to be just another harlequin romance story under the guise of something "edgy." Predictable story line, dull characters, so dull, in fact, that I didn't even care when bad things happened to them. It was obvious from the first second that Livvie would "fall" for Caleb; the author didn't even bother to make a struggle out of it. Caleb is the typical "bad boy" of harlequin trash: a very slightly kinky (read: what vanilla people think kinky is)guy who deep inside is a poor damaged little boy who just wants to be loved. Livvie is supposed to be a slave being prepared in some way for being sold to an unseen (and undeveloped) villain, but she isn't trained or prepared to be a slave, save for half-assed brainwashing ("Your name is Kitten."...and that's it) and Caleb's avoiding taking her virginity. And of course she's a virgin...that's another stereotype. I'm not meaning to be rude to anyone who enjoyed this book, it obviously has some appeal to some people, but for me, it held no suspense, weak characters, half-assed eroticism, and an excessively formulaic storyline.
