So I admit it what with the description and despite the slightly horrid cover, I had high expectations for this book. I mean it promises the sweetest romance in fairytale history...I think it lied. I am so confused on my thoughts and feelings for this book, I wanted to like it so bad and I feel like if just a few small things had been different this easily could have been an epic fairytale love story, but it fell flat.
Angel is a fairly normal 17 year old girl, brought up in a rich family where she's expected to wear dresses and high heels when all she wants is to be normal. And then she falls off her balcony and ends up in Neverland where she meets the lost boys and Peter Pan and Captain Hood, forgetting her past and struggling to find her way home.
Let's Talk -
Character development - This is where this book is really lacking. There were so many good things that were ignored, that if developed better could have made this an epic book. Let's start with Peter Pan, in the beginning I got the sense that he was almost slightly evil, wanting to keep the lost boys and Angel with him, wanting them to forget. And eventually we find out more about his past but I wanted more, I wanted the author to build on that, make me feel sorry for him, or make me hate him or Hook, just something. It's like the author wanted to have you guessing over who the bad guy was when really neither of them were developed enough to be a bad guy or a good guy. Then we have Hook and honestly he was too much of a "good guy", like I get you're not totally evil and you have feelings for Angel but you've been a pirate for at least fifty years, you're supposed to at least be a badass. With Angel I felt like she was naive, to say the least and I kinda hated her, she was a weak character.
Plot development - Again so lacking. The whole book takes place over a week(maybe?) and it should have been longer. Right away Hook basically gives up on looking for the treasure to help Angel because he apparently loves her, insta love of course, and just there was basically no plot as far as I could see. This book has a great premise and nothing else.
Romance - Insta love anyone? I've tried to stop judging a book on it's insta love factor but this was horrible. They didn't get to know each other at all, the reader doesn't get to know them, it's a lot of kissing and thinking about kissing and worrying they're falling for each other and then falling for each other and no development at all! And then I think there might have been a hint of a love triangle with Peter...? Maybe?
Characters - I can't honestly think of any character I liked. Hook was probably my favorite and that's not saying much. It's just Angel acted like she knew everyone when they'd barely met, she saw the lost boys for a couple hours and suddenly they're like old friends? Peter was the worst. We knew nothing abut him yet he felt betrayed because Angel didn't want to stay with him and...it was just bad.
Dialogue - Okay, Captain Hook should not say things like "What's up" and "fancypants"....just no. The dialogue really took me out of the story and just irritated me.
Final Thoughts - There were so many things that could have been better, that could have made this book great. Pretty much everything needed just a bit more development, I get that this is a romance book first but even that needed a little more time to make it feel real and to make readers feel it was real, make it so that when they have to break up it pulls on my heartstrings, this didn't. I feel like even another 100 pages filled with character and plot development and just more everything and this book could have been great.
One final final thought is that I didn't like how Angel had no idea what Neverland was, she had just read Peter Pan to her sisters and I think it would have been better if she remembered the story. Then it would have made sense that she knew Peter Pan was the good guy and Hook bad rather than just blindly believing what Peter told her.
Overall - I still have hopes for this story and I am going to read the sequel because I want it to be what I was hoping this one would be, but honestly this was a disappointment. It had a great premise but it fell short for me.
