Kate In Waiting by Becky Albertalli (3⭐️)

Okay, so, it was okay. I mostly liked it. I mostly really liked it. Kate is the main character and she always has the same crush as her best friend, Anderson. They call them “communal crushes”. It’s fun and all but this time, with Matt, it’s serious. A serious crush. It has never been like that until now.

>> cons
  • I wasn’t bored but nothing happened. It was so nothing that I felt like I was supposed to be bored but I wasn’t for some reason. I predicted the twist immediately too but I didn’t mind it. It was cute.
  • A book wins me over through characters and I had trouble liking the main character, Kate. She was very delusional but aren’t we all? She was definitely relatable but I didn’t like the way she handled things, I guess. Matt was worse, not as a person but as a character. He lacked personality. He was just a friendly guy with no arc whatsoever. I don’t see what others see in him. There wasn’t any valid explanation. I felt like there was a lot of missing information in general. Sorry, it sounds like I hated the book but I didn’t.

>> pros
  • I LIKED THE BOOK. It was very cute. I loved and forever will love Noah with everything in me. Anytime I saw Noah’s name, I’d go, “YES. YES. NOAH!” Ugh, I love Noah so much. He was such a wholesome talkative goofball.
  • The dynamic and development between Kate and her brother were very common among siblings. Their relationship felt real.
  • Like I said, Kate was relatable. The friend group was relatable. Everything was super relatable. Throughout the book, I found myself going like, “That’s so me,” or “That’s so [*insert friend’s name*].”
  • There was a lot of representation (gay, trans, Jewish, etc) which I appreciated.
