A Brief History of Time
by Stephen Hawking
In a nutshell, this book is incredibly complex and thought-provoking. It is also worth all of the hard work I put into getting through it.
A Brief History of Time was written to help the general public understand the basic subjects of cosmology and astrophysics. I, however, found the content to be extremely complicated. It took me more than a month to finish the book. I would sometimes spend several hours on a ten-page chapter, and I had to have my laptop in front of me for quick Google searches on topics that Hawking would reference but not explain.
At the end of my endeavor (and 20 pages of notes), however, I'm glad I read it. I feel like I finally have a grasp on the more interesting topics of cosmology and astrophysics and have a basic understanding of the big subjects such as the big bang theory, string theory and time travel. Hawking, of course, is brilliant, and just reading his thoughts and explanations was a treat, even if it took a great amount of brainpower to understand.
A Brief History of Time was a definite challenge, but if you're interested in the topics included in this work, it's a must-read.
Outside research included the following:
Several dozen Google searches
A handful of scientific journals
Two YouTube videos
