This is an incredibly strong collection of novellas overall. 1922, Fair Extension, and A Good Marriage are great, with the first and the last being highlights. Big Driver is middling, and it features a hallmark of King’s writing; writing from a perspective and about a topic of which he has little insight and even less business inhabiting. That being said, the protagonist remains engaging, and this collection really shows King turning that corner into his “crime” era. While bleak (full dark…), the collection is gripping.
