Jillian: A Novel by Halle Butler

3.0

Jillian is a subversive portrait of two women trapped in cycles of delusion and self-destruction to the point of metamorphosing one into the other. It is a book that generates uneasiness, an almost comical frustration, with its quick format and delirious reflections. You'll hate Megan and Jillian and Carrey and Randy and everyone else, coming to the conclusion that everyone has insufferable parts of themselves.

Butler (the writer) demonstrates real skill in keeping the reader alternating between rooting for and not liking any of the characters. The book is irritating, but you can't stop reading it.
