dbroebuck96 's review for:
Papillon
by Henri Charrière
What an epic adventure (and at 560 pages, I do mean epic).
This book is extremely readable, never a dull moment, and it was interesting to see how Charrière's experiences changed him as a person. The strokes of luck this guy had are crazy; but his rather matter-of-fact recounting of horrific encounters makes for compelling reading. I enjoyed how he never bigs himself up; he's not claiming to be anyone particularly special nor even a great writer, but there were some observations in this book that I found quite thought-provoking.
I know that the authenticity of the events described in this book has been questioned, but as the author himself maintained that they are true, I'm happy putting this under 'non-fiction'.
