A Woman in the Polar Night by Christiane Ritter

adventurous hopeful informative inspiring reflective

4.0

This is the classic memoir of the Austrian painter Christiane Ritter's year in the Arctic wilderness (in this case: Svalbard), together with her husband and a Norwegian man called Karl.
(In 1934!!!)

It's about the beauty and brutality of living far north, where it's cold, dark, remote and extremely quiet.

When I reached the end of the book this morning, I found myself quite moved; it felt like I had been through the same as Christiane, and I felt a deep appreciation for nature and for being alive.

Immediately after, I went out into the winter storm in Oslo (walking around Sognsvann and at Majorstua. There weren't many people at Sognsvann today, haha). I was bursting with joy, enjoying every moment of cold wind in my face😁

When it isn't blocking our roads or messing with the trains, winter is honestly the best season;)

(But I'll admit that it's pretty extreme at the moment in Norway, so take care, fellow Norwegians❤️)
