I'm not a big fan of Christmas specials and this one didn't change my mind about them. Some of the character development in the second half was nice but because of the nature of the book it felt very episodic and each chapter didn't have significant consequences down the line. I think the book also suffered a lot from repetitive sentence structure, constant grandiose and ominous statements, and the characters talking about the destruction and suffering of the war to the point where it felt hammed up.
