Doll Bones by Holly Black

Loved this book. Three friends on the verge of adolescence must confront the fact that they are getting too old to play pretend. The problem, of course, is that they still really love their created worlds and characters. What unfolds is a great adventure that involves midnight bus trips, sailing down the Ohio river, breaking into a library, and ultimately searching for the graveyard where a creepy doll can be buried and the spirit of a little girl laid to rest. I love this book as both a coming-of-age story and as an adventure. I'm also personally drawn to and fascinated by these characters who love to imagine and create but who know that they are expected to give it up. I'm still working out exactly how to respond to this issue eloquently.

My one and only complaint is that I think that the spooky factor of this book was oversold. Yes, the doll is creepy. But I didn't at any point feel the need to hide under a blanket. Still, this is probably a good dose of creepy for those who don't want a lot of scary.
