An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

Rating: 4.5 stars
This is a great YA fantasy novel which is set in one of the most original worlds I have read about. It strongly reminded me of old fantasy series by Judith Tarr. The world is a blend of ancient civilizations, and if I had to pick, I would say it is a crossover between Persia and Ancient Rome. The first part of the book was a bit slow, but it was well written, and the second half took off in terms of action.
There is an open ending which left no doubt that it should have a sequel. I am very curious about what sort of book it would be as there were a lot of things left unresolved and/or with potential for a grand action.
Great character development, which is not often so well portrayed in YA fantasy books. A very solid debit novel.
